MI EXPERIENCIA DEL MONASTERIO DE LAS HUELGAS

Lo conocí por pura casualidad en un viaje con un compañero salesiano brasileño. Hicimos la visita turística, nos marchamos y punto. Pero aquel edificio, sobre todo la silueta de su fachada exterior, se me quedó profundamente grabada. Me impresionó la solidez, belleza y armonía de su arquitectura, la sobria majestad de su torre, la amplitud de su patrio interior y la elegancia austera de sus pórticos. Aquel día quedaron impresos en mi mente, y sobre todo en mi corazón, los casi mil años de historia del Monasterio de las Huelgas.

Años después volví a Burgos para residir en la casa salesiana de Parralillos situada, ¡oh fortuna!, al lado mismo del Monasterio. Solo un sólido muro de piedra nos separa de modo que desde mi ventana contemplo, sin ningún esfuerzo, su amplia y hermosa huerta.

Tiempo después quiso Dios que se me presentara la oportunidad de celebrar con cierta frecuencia la Eucaristía a las monjas y de predicarles los retiros mensuales, actividad, esta última, que todavía ejerzo. Fue entonces cuando tuve la oportunidad de conocer el verdadero corazón del monasterio: la comunidad cisterciense que lo habita.

Recuerdo que en mi visita turística de años atrás la guía nos explicó que allí dentro vivía una comunidad de monjas, pero a ellas no las vimos ni las sentimos. Celebrándoles la Eucaristía entendí, sin dificultad, el sentido de sus vidas discretas y escondidas. Así como los seres humanos no necesitamos ver ni sentir nuestro corazón para saber que está ahí y que gracias a él vivimos, así también esta comunidad cisterciense late y transmite vida al mundo sin necesidad de hacerse visible a los humanos.

Yo, salesiano y miembro de una congregación de vida activa entendía sin dificultad que aquello estaba bien así y que así debía ser. A las monjas cistercienses, como a nuestro corazón, no les hace falta publicidad para ser, por sí mismas, reflejo de Dios a quien siguen en su vocación contemplativa. A mí, sin pedirlo ni merecerlo se me concedía el privilegio de contemplar el corazón cisterciense del Monasterio y de sentir sus latidos pautados por el silencio y la oración de sus monjas.

La oración de la comunidad cisterciense impacta y conmueve. Para ellas es su forma de vida normal y cotidiana, pero para quien llega del mundo de la velocidad, los compromisos y las prisas, participar en sus celebraciones litúrgicas es penetrar en una atmósfera diversa, abrirse a nuevos horizontes y percibir que la vida puede ser, como lo es para ellas, de otro modo.

¿Y las monjas? ¿Qué decir de ellas? Que son mujeres muy normales, espontáneas y comunicativas, que es agradable hablar con ellas y un gusto pasar unos días en su hospedería. Tienen sus problemillas, como todos, pero la jovialidad y la sonrisa prevalecen en sus rostros como expresión de su paz y sosiego interior. Como el edificio que las cobija, transmiten solidez, belleza, armonía y sobria austeridad. Las conozco, les he celebrado la Eucaristía, les predico los retiros, las escucho y hablo con ellas y puedo asegurar que es así, tal como digo.

Algunos salesianos de mi comunidad tenemos la costumbre de dar un paseo nocturno en el que solemos pasar por delante del Monasterio para contemplar, una y otra vez, su monumental silueta y su hermoso patio interior. ¡Es tal la variedad de matices y de perspectivas que ofrece que su vista nunca cansa, aunque se le vea todos los días! Cuando está iluminado su silueta destaca en la oscuridad haciéndose visible en la distancia; cuando no lo está basta la suave luz de la luna para dar fe de su presencia; cuando llueve la luz de los focos se refleja en las gotas de agua que caen a modo de chispitas que lo adornan y embellecen; cuando la niebla lo rodea e invade parece flotar entre la bruma introduciendo al visitante en un clima de misterio sobrecogedor; y por fin, cuando los copos de nieve caen sin prisa ni ruido sobre sus muros y tejados, se tiene la sensación de que hasta el conjunto arquitectónico se sumerge en el clima de oración suave y pausado de las monjas.

Me despido, querido lector, con una invitación: visita el Monasterio de las Huelgas pero no te quedes en la clásica visita turística. Acércate a su corazón y escucha su suave latir orante. Participa de algunas de las celebraciones litúrgicas de las monjas y, si tienes ocasión, pasa unos días en el silencio de su hospedería reflexionando sobre tu propia vida y… orando.
