Conozco Burgos desde que era pequeña. Todos los veranos, camino del País Vasco, Burgos era parada obligatoria. Entonces no había carretera de circunvalación y nos gustaba admirar el Arco de Santa María, las agujas bellísimas de la Catedral…. Cada año visitábamos un monumento de la ciudad. A mí me encantaba entrar en la Catedral y me divertía mirando al Papamoscas, mientras mi padre se empeñaba en explicarnos las cosas más interesantes.

Recuerdo confusamente el verano que visitamos Las Huelgas. Un Monasterio cargado de historia, con su Museo, sus tumbas, su magnífica iglesia… Un monumento más de Burgos. Poco podía yo imaginarme que muchos años después, Las Huelgas iba a ser algo muy importante para mí…

Ha pasado el tiempo y ahora puedo hablar desde mis muchos años, haciendo historia de mi vida. Me casé, tuve hijos, seguí pasando por Burgos cada verano, me integré con mi esposo en un grupo de matrimonios, colaboramos en actividades parroquiales… Fue una época preciosa. Mi marido murió muy joven de un cáncer de pulmón, y yo tuve que ponerme a trabajar para sacar adelante a una familia numerosa que hoy se mantiene unida…. Y mantuve la amistad con los otros matrimonios de mi grupo, amistad que se fue consolidando hasta hacerse muy fuerte y muy fraterna. Con ellos recé, con ellos reí, con ellos sufrí, con ellos viajé, con ellos compartí…

Una de esas parejas fue muy especial para todos los que la tratábamos. Seis hijos, diez y seis nietos, una buena posición, una honda espiritualidad, una disponibilidad para todo lo que se presentara… Pero Santiago enfermó. Gracias a la atención médica, a los cuidados de Mari Carmen y a una enorme fuerza de voluntad,   aguantó 18 años con un nivel de vida bastante aceptable. Hasta que se nos fue.

La vida siguió, pero Mari Carmen empezó a vivir “en otra dimensión”. Un día nos convocó a todos los amigos y soltó la bomba. ME VOY DE MONJA DE CLAUSURA. Cada uno reaccionamos de manera distinta. Unos la aplaudieron, otros se enfadaron, otros la pidieron explicaciones… Yo fui de las que me rebelé. La entendí, pero no la comprendí. Y confieso que sigo un poco rebelde. Las reacciones de los hijos fueron también de todo tipo. Hoy, ellos y nosotros, aceptamos y admiramos, quizá porque no nos queda más remedio.

Esto, dicho en tan pocas palabras, fue un proceso largo y difícil, sobre todo para ella. Pero Dios es caprichoso y llama cuando quiere. Y en este caso la respuesta fue afirmativa y generosa. Pero no fue fácil, porque incluso la edad -71años- era un obstáculo para su admisión. Pero cuando es el Espíritu el que sopla, ni todas las abadesas del mundo diciendo que no, tienen nada que hacer. Y se marchó a las Huelgas de Burgos. Por eso, ese Monasterio que visité varias veces cuando era joven, hoy tiene para mí un encanto especial. Allí está mi gran amiga, con la que he compartido tantas cosas, y trato de seguir compartiendo, aunque ahora de otra manera. Voy a verla siempre que puedo, y me parece que aquella es un poco mi casa. He aprendido a querer aquellos muros, aquellas galerías interminables, aquella capilla deliciosa, aquel eco de salmodias repetidas, aquellas monjas estupendas que han dejado de ser anónimas porque las llamo por su nombre y ellas me conocen…

Hoy, Mari Carmen y yo somos mayores, hemos vivido mucho. Yo trato de convertir nuestra lejanía en cercanía, y a veces no es fácil. Ya he dicho que sigo un poco rebelde, pero sé que ella ha elegido la mejor parte. ¡Contaría tantas cosas! Pero creo que por hoy ya basta. He resumido una historia larga, difícil, generosa, sencilla y complicada a la vez. Los muros de las Huelgas deben guardar muchas historias interesantes, bonitas, y hasta heroicas, pero no cabe duda de que ésta es una de las mejores.
